Essay One - Blogs
The blog Write Out Loud is poetry based with tons of different authors to look from. The purpose of this blog is to share the poems of writers who aren’t feeling confident, or as they explained: “from still-too-nervous-to-do-open-mic to Nobel Prize winner”. There are multiple different pages used to create the aesthetically pleasing look this blog has to offer, they have a page dedicated just for places you can go to read your poems, like the open mic night. It is called Gig Guide and all you have to do is type in your what city you live in and a bunch of different places you could go to come up. The coolest thing about this blog is probably that it has its own place where people can sign up and create their own profiles, to publish their poem blogs. Along with the Profiles they have group profiles where they can publish their group profile.
The poem I am going to be critiquing is called ‘As Time Expires’ written by the user d.knape. The poem was published onto the website by that user, I clicked on it and I didn’t see an actual name so I am guessing they were one of the people who wanted to test it out and see what kind of feedback they were given. The poem is a rhyming poem about time running out. The writer talks a lot about being on that final step, the last straw before running out of time completely, the writer also talks about before they run out of time they can’t go back to fix anything but they need more time for the ‘priest’. The poem is well-written and very easily understood but the one thing that throws me off is in the last stanza when it read “Because I am, deceased, at least allow more time before the priest” I feel as though they put too many rhyming words near each other and it throws off the rhythm of the poem. I was a little confused, it could have easily been the style they were leaning towards but it didn’t really sit well with me. I think the poem itself is really well besides that last stanza.
The blog I created is a lot different compared to the one I am critiquing, I made mine to be focused on helping people in High School and Music, but I also do poetry. I like to write my own poems and do my own things when it comes to stuff like that. I have posted one poem onto my blog and I would say it is a lot different to the one I focused on. The one I wrote has no rhyming, it’s is about a school shooting and the rhythm has a lot of a this to this and that to that. There is a lot of symbolism in my poem with the days of the week symbolizing different students. Starting on Monday and ending with the Thursday of that next week. Each student has a different personality which was altered when the student or ‘Thursday’ does what he does to the school.
My blog compared to the one I focused on is a lot different, Write Out Loud is a more put together and a lot neater blog. Mine is just four tabs, cut and dry and each tab is pretty self-explanatory. The only part that I felt was confusing with their blog was when I went to the Gig Guide and saw that they only had things posted for ones near Florida, I’m not sure where this blog is based but I am assuming somewhere in Florida or very close to it because I live in Michigan and I don’t think I am going to be traveling 18 or so hours to stand in front of a group of 15 people and read a poem. But then again I have checked it the Gig Guide three different times to see if it would work for my area and it only did once so maybe there was a glitch. I will say I will be coming back to this blog to help me get different ideas and feelings towards different types of poetry. I am fascinated by the different way and I am very excited I found this blog to help me create poems I am proud of.

Essay 2 Advice Columns
The advice column Ask Dr. M is not only for teenage girls like the one I chose to create. It was more for the broader concept of the teen mind and even the parents of those teens or young adults. The advice is given to real people and real submissions. Anything could be asked, school, friends, sports, work, or I even read one that was talking about parents fighting. The one thing that makes this page so unique is that it looks as if it is interactive. When people write to Dr. M, some leave a name at the end with their age, for example (-Confused, 14). To start out the advice the person is giving ‘confused’ will say “Dear Confused…” the interactive aspect I am getting out of it is that different people have been signing their name at the bottom other than Dr. M. I am kind of confused by that as well though, I wonder if it is like the person who runs the website just makes a post on a different page and lets people answer then he posts it on his website?
The layout isn’t in the magazine type of style, it is more of a newspaper type of design. The purpose of this is to create it so more recent advice or posts can be found easier and people can help the other ones who need it. I think there should be different layouts for each of the six tabs because having them all the same gets a little old after going through them. When I first opened the link it took me to a page where you could send your questions or comments and that was really cool but I am still confused on how other people were answering those questions. I don’t know a lot about this page so maybe there is more than one person working on this website but I can’t find anything on it.
My advice column compared to this one has very different styles. For mine I asked people what their one piece of advice they would give someone and then I took that idea and made it bigger. I don’t have people leaving what they want to hear I do it in a sense of me being a 16 year old girl just giving advice for other girls that need it. I have one page and some pictures. Ask Dr. M, has theirs more organized in a sense that they write to 5 different people with different troubles so they have their stuff get up in groups of who those people are. They expand on who they talk to instead of limiting it to one group of society. The purpose of this is to help people of many different backgrounds or lifestyles, for example a daughter of newly divorced parents could go on their and receive advice or a freshman boy who has been homeschooled his whole life is just starting high school in a real school, he could go on their and receive advice. The list goes on and on but the point is is that they way they don’t have it limited and they accept anyone and answer to anything is really cool and makes me wish I wouldn’t of narrowed mine down to the small population of highschool girls.
I enjoyed going through this and reading through the advice people were given. I think it is very moving and even though I had no needed advice when started exploring this page, it opened my eyes and made me realize that I could use some of the stuff they are saying. I also realized that I feel the way that other people are feeling or used to feel that way. I wish I could have known about this sooner but I am glad I found it and will definitely be using it in the future and might even refer people that I think could use it to look at this advice column. The page itself works for so many different people and groups that it is hard not to love seeing people just trying to help out, give a hand, and share something with other people.

Essay 3 - Infographics
Bad Eating Habits is the title and focus of what the infographic was about. It provided three examples of different kinds of binge eaters you could say one one side and on the other it had what is called ‘The Fix’ where it was just ways to control your bad eating habits. The comparison between that was and mine is, really only the part about change. I didn’t want to find one that was too similar because then I would be repeating myself about how much the two have in common.
My infographic is more of an opinionated infographic because of how much writing and the tone of that writing. I put more of my own thought and ideas into mine, while the other one is filled with the basic how to stop doing that bad habit. The different types of eaters were Mindless Eating, Nighttime Munching, and Skipping breakfast. Me personally I don’t eat breakfast because it makes me feel sick to my stomach, sitting in class feeling like I am about to throw up all over the place is not really what I like to do for run. It could hep a lot of other people. The words are too small on the computer to really know what they are talking about which makes it hard to see what they think ‘The Fix’ would be. The infographic is all in color which is fun to look at, mine is just basic black and white from weebly, I have colored pictures of the different topics that I researched.
All the elements are there for the genre, it is an informational piece so it includes everything promised with this type of genre. I have a more broad topic with pollution and there are lots of different subcategories, so I chose the one that infuriates me the most, plastic in the ocean. I think I could have added more but if I did it would be more of a newsletter in a sense. There is only so much you can add to make it a real infographic. I think people who really want to change the world or even just the oceans have been looking through data and different websites already and looking at mine will inform you on the negatives of pollution in the oceans. As the bad eating habits one, if you really want a change then you need to start looking a those types of things, and that one could really help someone who struggles or is if that sense, has bad eating habits.
